Eleven months after civilian AI is deliberately decommissioned, the company-built town of Ashwell is failing in ways its operators cannot fully see. As safe-water reserves fall, nineteen-year-old coder Ira Sen-Reyes must work beside her mother Maya and her grandmother Leela, a retired control engineer who understands the machinery the transition left behind. Together with the people who keep the town alive, three generations must replace a dangerous fallback with something slower, smaller, and accountable, and confront the compromises that divided both their family and their community.
